Patient Instruction for Use

MODIA is available for clinical use under the direction of a healthcare professional during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency under FDA’s Enforcement Policy for Digital Health Devices for Treating Psychiatric Disorders (not FDA-cleared).

The therapeutic content provided through MODIA is not intended as a substitute for treatment provided by a clinician.

Intended Use:

MODIA is intended to provide digital cognitive behavioral therapy for patients who have been diagnosed with opioid use disorder (OUD).

Indication for Use:

MODIA is intended to provide digital cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), 18 years of age or older, as a part of a clinician supervised medication-assisted treatment program for opioid use disorder (OUD). MODIA is a prescription only device to be ordered by a clinician.

What is MODIA?

MODIA is a web-based program that can be used at any time of the day for a length of 180 days on a mobile phone, tablet, or computer with an internet browser.

MODIA uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills to treat individuals diagnosed with OUD. By engaging users in custom exercises, it aims to reduce symptoms of OUD. Each MODIA section focuses on relevant topics, such as learning about the short-term and long-term effects of using opioids, learning behavioral and mental skills to help with urges or cravings to use, learning problem solving skills, emotional regulation skills (eg, managing depression, anxiety, or anger), and recognizing possible signs of relapse.

The content in MODIA is delivered via brief messages with menus of response options, audio recordings, pictures, worksheets and summaries. MODIA also asks patients to complete two surveys to monitor progress.

MODIA can customize its interactions with users depending on the specific responses selected by the user. MODIA helps users develop a customized relapse prevention plan that includes risk-behaviors, triggers, cravings, and coping strategies based on the responses collected in the exercises.

Duration and Frequency of Use:

The usage period per access key is 180 calendar days after initial registration.

It is recommended for the individual to use MODIA 1-2 times per week for at least 15 minutes per session.
